Panda Grappling's Philosophy
Panda Grappling was established after I realized that the grappling art I was studying (BJJ) was incomplete. Although a great style, it is only one aspect of the grappling game. Grappling covers more than just rolling around on the ground. Grappling starts just inside of striking range. It involves all aspects of fighting such as punching, kicking, knees, elbows, head butts, and in some extremes there is also pinching and biting. Unfortunately, there is no one system which shows all of these different techniques/methods of grappling.
The break down of commonly studied grappling arts is as follows:
BJJ= 95% ground work (95% of the groundwork is upper body attacks, the remaining 5% is lower body attacks) and 5% takedowns.
Judo= 90% Throws and 10% submission (primarily upper body).
Sambo= 90% Throws and 10% submissions (primarily lower body).
Wrestling= 50% throws and 50% ground control positions. Although there are no submission holds parse, there are a lot of set ups that can be used to gain a submission.
Aikido= Primarily control through small joint manipulations (i.e. the wrist, neck) uses opponents momentum against them.
Hapkido= Similar to Aikido except with more strikes.
Wing chun= A medium distance grappling style that is focused primarily on staying close and controlling or striking an opponent.
The goal of Panda Grappling is to provide a complete style of grappling. By taking elements of each of the above arts and combining them, we fill in the holes left by each.
